Lifeforms Foundation Evo
Lifeforms Foundation Evo

An instrument designed for deep exploration of both east and west coast synthesis styles while showcasing the full depth of the Lifeforms sound and design philosophies, the Lifeforms Foundation Evo is our flagship modular synthesizer.

The Lifeforms Foundation Evo is a deeply rich and creative laboratory packed with all the tools necessary for late night sonic diversions and inspiring live performances. A set of complex oscillators, pressure sensitive performance controller, multiple arpeggiators, multiple sequencers, voltage controlled analog delay, chaotic random cv and gate generators, and multiple filter types are just the tip of the iceberg.

East Coast Mastery

Four beefy analog oscillators with a full complement of waveforms rich in harmonics and modulation options, three resonant filters, a pair of four stage envelopes, and deep midi options, the Lifeforms Foundation Evo is the perfect choice for maximum east coast style subtractive synthesis. The Lifeforms Foundation Evo can be patched up to create massive four oscillator monophonic or true duophonic dual oscillator synth voices, and can be controlled with the built-in pressure sensitive keyboard, or with any combination of included sequencers and arpeggiators.

West Coast Chemistry

The same set of complex oscillators that sing for the east coast open to reveal even more for the west. FM, non-linear waveshaping, and a unique variable response lowpass gate drive the Lifeforms Foundation Evo deep into west synthesis territory. An additional lowpass gate, voltage controlled multi-function generator, chaotic random generators, pressure sensitive controller, voltage controlled analog delay, and a complete set of utility modules firmly plant the Lifeforms Foundation Evo flag on west coast soil.

A Eurorack Synthesizer

The Lifeforms Foundation Evo is not simply a collection of eurorack modules pieced together to fill a case. All of the modules in the Lifeforms Foundation Evo were designed simultaneously as a single, monolithic synthesizer to ensure that it sounds and feels like a complete instrument. While the Lifeforms Foundation Evo Synthesizer is designed to function as a standalone instrument, it is also a 100% eurorack compatible modular synthesizer.  Housed in our Structure EP-208 road case, the system is made up of 15 individual eurorack format synthesizer modules which can be removed, reorganized, and replaced with Pittsburgh Modular or other eurorack compatible modules.

Lifeforms SV-1 Blackbox
Lifeforms SV-1 Blackbox

Desktop Portability with Analog Power and Modular Flexibility
The Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers Lifeforms SV-1 Blackbox is a complete, standalone desktop format modular synthesizer. A full compliment of analog tools for sonic experimentation stuffed into a portable, powered steel enclosure. Two patchable oscillators and our legendary state-variable filter are paired with a perfectly curated set of synthesis components including a dual sub oscillator, dual, chained mixers, a plucky, four stage envelope generator, sample and hold, noise, low frequency oscillator, voltage controlled amplifier, a feature rich MIDI to CV converter, and a pair of utility signal splitters.

A self-contained modular powerhouse, the Lifeforms SV-1 Blackbox provides absolutely everything you need to create gigantic and iconic synth sounds, in the studio or on the go.

Your Sound, Your Way
Pre-patched under the hood, patch cables are not necessary to get started. But as soon as you begin patching, you will feel the power provided by the 53 patch points and 21 knobs. By breaking each feature of the synthesizer out with patch cables, a tremendous amount of flexibility and control emerges to patch up any sound your imagination can dream up. All the tried and true analog classics are there at your disposal: sine, sawtooth, triangle and square. In addition, our exclusive and powerful blade wave on Oscillator 1 adds a unique weapon to your sonic arsenal. Deep modulation options award you complex control of nearly every function of the SV-1.

A Team Player
We’ve designed the Lifeforms SV-1 to be patch compatible any eurorack synthesizer regardless of size. In a smaller system, the SV-1 provides a wide variety of synthesis options through a hefty set of synthesis tools. Combined with a larger collection of modules, you can unlock never-before-heard expressiveness and unparalleled control over the rich feature set of the SV-1. The ability to patch and integrate the SV-1 with other existing eurorack compatible gear gives you truly infinite modulation and expansion options. The Lifeforms SV-1 module can also be removed from the Blackbox and inserted into a larger Structure eurorack enclosure or any other eurorack format case as your system grows.

Integrated Synthesizer Components

MIDI
The MIDI to CV converter enables you to connect all your MIDI-compatible gear and convert it to control voltage right inside the SV-1. Volt per octave and gate outputs allow you to connect to your MIDI keyboard or DAW and take control of the SV-1 your way.

Extensive patch options give you access to glide, CC, and velocity. A digital clock-syncable LFO with triangle and quantized random voltage waveforms provides even more modulation options. A clock input allows you to override the internal or MIDI clock and sync to external CV and gate clock signals. A built-in arpeggiator provides all of the deep arpeggio responses from the MIDI 3, including as played, double triggered, random, and random with random gate. This unlocks another level of playability and the capacity to create complex and fresh musical patterns out of just a few notes.

Oscillator 1 and Oscillator 2
Our next-generation dual analog oscillator provides the sonic framework for massive synth sounds or deep exploration of west coast style frequency modulation. Sine, triangle, saw, and square waves are at your control, all available to modulate via FM and hard sync. As a bonus, Oscillator 1 also contains our unique blade wave. The shape of the blade wave can be controlled using the width CV input, creating a sweeping or chorusing effect. Oscillator 2 is normalled to the FM of Oscillator 1, providing jaw-dropping analog FM bass, deep percussive hits, searing leads, and thick, warm analog pads which all come to life from these two modern, organic sounding oscillators. Both analog oscillators dip well below audio rate, allowing them to function as voltage controllable LFOs.

Modulation and Tools
A wide-range utility LFO with triangle and square wave outputs is ideal for VCA or Filter frequency sweeps. Or, turn it up and release the dynamic FM capabilities of either oscillator. A Tools section provides access to two sub-octave oscillators, derived from Oscillator 1’s core frequency. Analog noise and sample & hold finish out the Tools section — the hold function is initially pre-wired to MIDI clock, and equips you to create perfectly timed, random voltage steps.

Mixer
This versatile four channel mixer comes pre-wired for fast access to Oscillator 1’s sine, saw, pulse and sub. However, you are just a patch cable away from instantly making your own unique blend of waveforms from the SV-1. The mixer can be split into two independent two channel mixers simply by patching into the top output.

State Variable Filter
Rich and thick, the sound of the revered Pittsburgh Modular Filter is unmistakable. Absolutely stunning harmonic character with voltage control over the entire frequency range. A provided attenuverter lets you dial in exactly how much CV to feed the frequency input, even inverting the input for dramatic changes in modulation. Separate highpass, lowpass, and bandpass outputs are provided as breakout options, each with their own powerful sonic timbres. Turn up the resonance for an added growl, giving your tones an aggressive edge that no softsynth can match.

Four Stage Envelope Generator
Designed specifically for the Lifeforms SV-1 with a plucky, organic feel, our four-stage analog ADSR allows you to generate envelopes with remarkable, precise control over each stage. Pre-patched to receive gate signals directly from MIDI, the gate input may be overridden by any available clock, trigger, or square wave source.

Voltage Controlled Amplifier
The amplifier section not only controls the overall level of the output, but is voltage controllable. A clean, responsive VCA, capable of everything from transparent control to mild overdrive contours audio or CV signals. The ADSR is pre-patched to the level CV providing shape to the synthesizer audio.

Splitters
Two unbuffered audio or CV splitter sections allow you duplicate your signal in creative ways, routing a single audio or CV source to multiple destinations.

Line Level and Headphone Outputs
High quality stereo headphone amplifier and monophonic line level outputs controlled by a master volume knob.

Black System

  • Width/ 2 x 84HP
  • Power/ +1250mA

Integrated modular system with functionality of classical two oscillator synthesizer and tons of cool features to address contemporary needs of modular users in Erica Synths skiff case.

The heart of the system is two Polivoks inspired Black Varishape VCOs. Unique waveform mixer, PWM circuit and most importantly transistor based suboscillators will bring you one of the fattest sounding VCOs you can get around.

Go further and add some crazy sounds! Black Digital Noise makes range of noise effects: from almost pure white noise to Atari console-like one bit noise and other more-less predictable noises. Its CV control over various parameters and clock sync feature give infinite explorations in non-musical sounds.

Black HADSR/AHDSR envelope generator has unique looping functions and CV control over each parameter and lin/log envelope option.

Tow LFOs with broad range of functions including 6 waveforms + S&H, TAP tempo, sync, start on GATE function and built in VCA with LFO amplitude hold/attack and decay function. Moreover, it can also be used as envelope generator.

Black Output module has manual and voltage control panning, balanced outputs and headphone amplifier.

Last but not least, very accurate monophonic/duphonic MIDI-CV interface which has analogue GLIDE, master TUNE, modulation CV, key velocity CV, CV IN (adds CV from midi controller to external CV for arpeggios).

0-Coast

The 0-COAST is a single voice patchable synthesizer. It’s name reflects the fact that it utilizes techniques from both the Moog and Buchla paradigms (aka “East Coast,” and “West Coast,” due to their locations), but is loyal to neither and thus implements “no coast synthesis.”

While the 0-COAST utilizes classic modular synthesis techniques, we designed it to operate with or without the use of patch cables. The necessary connections have been made from circuit to circuit so it operates as an expressive, musical MonoSynth. Using only the MIDI controller of your choice you could apply new timbres to your existing musical forms!

Using the included Patch Cables you could get more scientific, experimenting with new ways to wire up the circuits. You might even forgo MIDI altogether, disappearing into a cloud of analog FM induced Sidebands and harmonics scattered around a single fundamental drone that has nothing to do with any form of music you’ve ever known.

  • NEW revision firmware NoCoast1.5.4 adds Portamento and other MIDI features. Download today!
  • 2 Channels of MIDI to CV and MIDI to Gate
  • Voltage Control of all circuits
  • Patchable w/ 13 Sources and 14 Destinations
  • Compatible w/ Eurorack Modular Synthesizer Signals
  • Sync to MIDI Clock
  • Dual mode MIDI Controlled Arppegiator

Black & Gold Shared System
Black & Gold Shared System

  • Type/ System
  • Width/ 190/208HP

The Shared System re-made in Black and Gold w/ the Erbe-Verb and CV Bus added. The personal favorite system of Make Noise founder Tony Rolando, this collection of modules is utilized by all artists for the Make Noise Records Shared System Series. It was also utilized by both Alessandro Cortini and Richard Devine for their performances at the 2012 Make Noise Opening party. The Shared System is the deepest and most complex of our systems bringing together all of our synthesis techniques into one system. From analog FM to voltage controlled granularization, the Shared System will go to more sound destinations than most folks have time to travel to in a single lifetime.
The CV Bus was originally designed for Alessandro Cortini's personal Make Noise system. It provides visual indication of level, rate and polarity for up to 4 control signals that will be shared throughout a patch. These 4 control signals are color coded and distributed across the center of the system allowing for quick, clean and intuitive patching. The distribution method is unlike the typical multiple since the control signals will appear beneath their possible destinations allowing for the use of shorter patch cables. The color coding and visual indication makes navigating complex patches easier and more intuitive. Typically, the CV Bus would be used to share the most important control signals in a patch such as your Master Clock.
The CV Bus also has the tools needed for integrating the Make Noise system with the outside world. A 1/4″ Mono input with plenty of gain allows for bringing external signals into the system. The optimal 10Vpp signal level is visually indicated. A high quality Stereo Line Driver converts powerful modular synthesizer signal levels to the commonly used Line Level. There is mini-jack inputs for Left and Right, a single Master Volume control, and a TRS Stereo 1/4″ output jack. This output is capable of driving long cable out to a PA System or a set of Headphones. It has AC coupling and a built-in limiting circuit (with visual indication) that prevents damage to ears and PA system when the patching gets experimental.
