For the first time in Eurorack, this oscillator module provides outputs for the first 8 harmonics as sine waves. Also included are triangle, saw, square waves. A voltage controlled mixer with various methods of address allows the user to scan, tilt and mix the harmonics from both panel and external voltage control.

It is built on a discrete, all analog triangle core with an old school discrete transistor exponential converter. It has inputs for linear and exponential FM, the exponential with a reversing attenuator. Of course there's a 1 volt/octave trimmed CV input as well.

Bark Filter Processor
Bark Filter Processor

A voluminous, voltage controllable analog filter bank comprised of twelve filter bands with individual outputs for envelope followers and audio, individual level control and dynamic frequency band scanning. The envelope followers’ speed is globally adjustable.

Due to the individual audio inputs and outputs for odd and even filter bands the module can be patched to be a six-band vocoder. You might as well combine two Bark Filters to a 12-band vocoder.

The Bark Filter Processor is based on the Bark scale, a psychacoustic perceptual scale of pitches, thus the module’s twelve frequency bands originate from the Bark Scale. The lowest band uses a band pass filter, the highest uses a high pass, all other bands use band pass filters. Besides an individual audio output each band also features a separate envelope follower CV output.

The levels of the filter bands can be set and modulated in a number of ways. On one hand for each individual band manually with the fader and with a CV which is injected into the socket below the fader. On the other hand there is the scan function konwn from Verbos’ own Harmonic Oscillator which dynamically can control several bands, independent of the faders:

“Frequency Scan” sequentially scans through the frequency spectrum, with Center and Width determining the center frequency and bandwidth

“Spectral Tilt” either emphasizes the low or high harmonics.

Each filter band passes an individual envelope follower which emits a CV. The sum of all twelve EV-CVs is available at the all followers output, though. The envelope followers’ decay times are set globally which affects the quickness of the filterbank – longer settings might be fine for voice, shorter more suitable for percussive signals.

The module has two level-adjustable audio inputs, each one for the odd and the even filter bands which makes possible to use the Bark Filter Processor as a dual six-band filterbank. The inputs can be criss-crossed by normalizations in order to process the same audio signal with all frequency bands. There are three mix audio outputs: one for all even bands, one for all odd bands and one for all frequency bands.

How to construct a six-band vocoder? One half of the bands is used as analysis section and is fed with speech for instance; the other half of the bands makes for the synthesis section and is fed with oscillator and noise signals. Now patch the analysis section’s envelope follower outputs to the level CV inputs of the synthesis section – the vocoder signal will be preent at the synthesis output. That’s it!

In the West Coast philosophy of synthesis, one oscillator modulating another is a classic way of creating rich timbres. Voltage control of the modulation and of the waveshape is essential for evolving the sounds from whatever CV sources.

The Verbos Electronics Complex Oscillator is configured as a master oscillator with an voltage controlled waveshaper and a modulation oscillator that can be used for FM or AM.

The waveshape of the modulation can be set to triangle, square or saw, each with a dedicated output. Modulation amount can be voltage controlled with a reversing attenuator on the CV input.

The master oscillator has dedicated outputs for triangle, square and sine waves. The master output can blend from sine to square to saw to folded sine all from voltage control with reversing attenuators on all of the CV inputs.

The oscillators are analog triangle cores with discrete transistor exponential converters. Each has inputs for linear and exponential FM. Both have 1 volt/octave trimmed CV inputs as well.

In theory, a sophisticated enough control voltage source can replace all of the control voltage sources in a modular system. That includes saw, square, pulse, triangle LFOs, AR, AD, ADSR, multistage envelopes, tracking generators, quantizers and of course sequencers.

It is not practical to actually replace all of these with one module type, but the Verbos Electronics Voltage Multistage can create any of these control signals.

As a sequencer, it has switchable slides and gates on each stage. Gate are output musically to match slides and stepped stages. As a multistage envelope, any stage can be the sustain. Stage “TIME” can be voltage controlled.

The “ref.” output is a falling ramp the length of the entire stage. This is usable as a decay envelope the length of the stage.

When the “strobe” input is pulsed, the setting of the “analog” control and CV input selects the stage. This is usable as a reset or to jump to any specific stage of the sequencer.

Reimagining the envelope generator, several shapes of 4 stage functions are available simultaneously on each of the two parts in the Multi-Envelope. From the same set of controls and voltage control inputs, each shape has its own dedicated output. All at the same time… Delay Attack Decay Sustain Release, Attack Hold Decay Sustain Release, Delay Attack Hold Release and (on the upper generator) Attack Decay Attack Release. End pulse outs allow chaining and looping. Gate and Trigger inputs can be used alone or together to control re-trigger characteristics. The “shape” control blends continuously from linear ramps to RC curves typical of East Coast Synthesis, without changing the overall time. The upper generator also has gate outs that are high during each stage.

The left side is a hipass filter with two cutoff CV inputs, each with a reversing attenuator and voltage controlled resonance. The right side is a lowpass filter with two cutoff CV inputs, each with a reversing attenuator and voltage controlled resonance.
These old school filters will not self oscillate, but they will screech and growl with the best of them. No IC amplifiers anywhere in the signal path.

The Amplitude & Tone controller is a totally discrete VCA with simultaneous exponential and linear CV input. It also contains an all discrete, Vactrol based VCF with diode limited resonance. It also has a discrete input gain stage. Careful balancing of the input gain and resonance control sets the mix of self oscillation and input signal, distorted on the VCA input if desired.
There are no ICs in the signal path.

In the great tradition of West Coast synthesis, the Verbos Electronics Touchplate Keyboard is a gold plated controller with 3 independent sections for sending control voltage signals. First is a 32 key volt/oct trimmed piano arrangement with 3 octave selects. It has an output for pitch CV, pressure (actually a measurement of the surface area of the finger touching the key), gate and 10ms trigger. Second is a pressure sensitive up/down bender that can be used to bend the VCO or anything that needs bending. Finally, an 8 key tunable keyboard with CV pressure and gate outputs. The Keyboard can be powered from normal Euro power or an external 9-15 volt positive tip DC supply, for use with un-power skiffs.
