Usamo
Usamo

The Expert Sleepers USAMO (Universal Sample-Accurate MIDI Output) provides a sample-accurate, jitter-free MIDI output from your DAW.

The MIDI signal is generated by the USAMO software, a plug-in which runs as a virtual instrument (AU/VST/AAX, Mac & Windows), as audio in your DAW. The DAW sends MIDI to the plug-in; the plug-in translates that to audio and sends it to the USAMO hardware, via an output on your computer's audio interface. The USAMO then reconstructs the MIDI and outputs it on a standard 5 pin DIN MIDI socket.

In addition to MIDI note and controller data from the DAW, the USAMO software also generates MIDI clock, Song Position Pointer etc. It can also handle Sysex.

Because the MIDI signals are generated and transported as audio, they are guaranteed to be sample-accurately synced with your audio, and free of the jitter often associated with computer-generated MIDI.

The USAMO uses the same technology previously available from Expert Sleepers Silent Way and the ESX-8MD module, but now in a standalone box, and from an analogue audio connection (the ESX-8MD requires a Eurorack housing and a digital audio connection).

Specifications

The USAMO's specifications are as follows:

  • Input: 1/4″ audio jack socket, accepts balanced or unbalanced signals
  • Output: standard 5 pin DIN MIDI socket
  • Controls: 'Trim' pot
  • Indicators: 'Power', 'Clip', 'Activity'
  • Power requirements: 9V DC @ 7mA, external PSU (not included)
  • Power connector: 2.1mm barrel socket, positive or negative tip
  • Aluminium box, 108x80x44mm (4.25″ x 3.15″ x 1.73″) (1U high, approximately quarter rack width)

ES-8
ES-8

  • Type/ In&Out
  • Width/ 8HP
  • Power/ +196mA/-52mA
  • Depth/ 50mm

The ES-8 is a USB 2.0 class-compliant audio interface in a Eurorack module, with DC-coupled inputs and outputs that can be used for both CVs and audio. As such it is directly compatible with all popular computer-based CV generation software (e.g. Silent Way, Max/MSP, Reaktor, CV Toolkit, zMors, Audulus, etc.) as well as audio and CV processing iOS apps.

The ES-8 also has ADAT inputs & outputs. This could be used for example to expand the I/O count via an Expert Sleepers ES-3 and/or ES-6, or to connect a traditional audio interface to add, say, mic preamps or 1/4″ line outputs.

An expansion header allows connection of an Expert Sleepers ES-5, to which in turn you can connect our gate, CV and MIDI expanders.

The ES-8 has a high quality internal clock, and it can optionally sync to the clock from the input ADAT signal.

ESX-8 MD
ESX-8 MD

  • Type/ Expander
  • Width/ 18HP
  • Power/ +51mA/-41mA
  • Depth/ 30mm

The ESX-8MD is an expansion module for the ES-4, ES-40 or ES-5, adding eight MIDI/DINsync outputs from one expansion header.

The ES-4/5 Controller software (part of Expert Sleepers Silent Way) allows the ESX-8MD outputs to be used for MIDI output (note – not just MIDI clock output, but as an actual MIDI port, capable of sending any MIDI messages). Since these outputs are driven from an audio connection, they have sample-accurate timing, which no USB MIDI interface can claim.

The Silent Way Sync plug-in would typically be used to send DINsync to the ESX-8MD, though any software capable of addressing the ES-4/5’s expansion headers, via Silent Way or the Max/MSP external, can send clock pulses to it.

ES-40
ES-40

  • Type/ Utility
  • Width/ 6HP
  • Power/ +26mA/-0mA
  • Depth/ 51mm

The ES-40 is a Eurorack format module which converts a standard S/PDIF input to five channels of expansion headers, which are used in conjunction with the Expert Sleepers ESX range of expanders (currently including the ESX-8GT, the ESX-4CV, the ESX-8CV and the ESX-8MD).

The ES-40 will connect to any audio device using the S/PDIF standard. This includes the digital audio output provided as standard on many recent Macs (more info here on the Mac connection).

The ES-40 also includes an S/PDIF output for sending data back to the computer. This output is used by expansion modules connected to the ES-40; currenty, the only such module is the ES-7 CV Input Expander.

The ES-40 is essentially an ES-4 with the DACs and CV outputs removed. Much of what has been written about the ES-4, and many tutorial videos etc., still apply to the ES-40.

Suggested combinations

The ES-40 does nothing by itself, but forms the basis of a very configurable system. Simply add the expansion modules you need. Here are some ideas:

  • 8 general purpose CVs – an ES-40 plus an ESX-8CV gives you a flexible, general purpose modular controller.
  • 8 CV/gate pairs – an ES-40, an ESX-8CV and an ESX-8GT gives you enough outputs for 8 classic monosynths – or to realise that 8 voice polyphonic modular you’ve been dreaming of.
  • 8 drum triggers – an ES-40 and an ESX-8GT gives you 8 triggers for your rack of drum modules, for the ultimate in sample-accurate rhythm. Add up to four more ESX-8GTs for up to 40 triggers/gates/clocks!
  • MIDI & DINsync – an ES-40 and an ESX-8MD form a sample-accurate, jitter-free, multi-port MIDI interface.
  • digital audio – an ES-40 and an ES-7 gives you two channels of 24 bit analogue-to-digital conversion to get your modular audio into your DAW.

ES-6
ES-6

  • Type/ Utility
  • Width/ 6HP
  • Power/ +67mA/-24mA
  • Depth/ 52mm

The ES-6 is the counterpart to the ES-3 Lightpipe/CV Interface, offering up to 8 channels of CV input with output via an optical lightpipe connection. As with the ES-3, the ES-6 also works well for audio signals, with conversion quality on a par with a regular audio interface (see here or here).

The ES-6 itself has 6 input sockets; the remaining 2 channels are provided by an expansion module e.g. the ES-7.

Please note that a connected ES-3 is required for operation. The ES-6 gets its clock signals from the ES-3, which derives them from its lightpipe input.

ES-5
ES-5

  • Type/ Expander
  • Width/ 4HP
  • Power/ +8mA/-0mA
  • Depth/ 49mm

The ES-5 is an expansion module for the Expert Sleepers ES-3 Lightpipe/CV Interface.

It piggybacks on one of the ES-3’s stereo channels to provide eight gate/clock/sync/MIDI outputs on the ES-5 itself, plus further expansion headers to connect up to six expansion modules e.g. the ES-4 Gate Expander.

Specifications

The ES-5’s specifications are as follows:

  • Panel width: 4HP
  • Module depth: 49mm
  • Digital input: connection from ES-3 module
  • Analogue outputs: 8x 3.5mm jacks, DC-coupled
  • Output voltages: 0V/5V
  • Indicators: LED per channel
  • Expansion
  • Current draw: 8mA on the +12V rail, 0mA on the -12V rail (8mA total)

The front panel is drilled for both Doepfer and Analogue Systems mounting holes (using a ‘slot’ rather than a single round hole). The power connector is a Doepfer standard 16 way IDC, with -12V furthest from the top of the board.

Note that connection to the ES-3 is by a simple plug-in cable for the ES-3 mk2 only. The original ES-3 requires some soldering to add the required connections.

ES-3 MKIII
ES-3 MKIII

  • Type/ Utility
  • Width/ 8HP
  • Power/ +168mA/-30mA
  • Depth/ 53mm

The ES-3 is a Eurorack format module which converts eight channels of ADAT Lightpipe input to DC coupled outputs on 3.5mm jacks, for the ultimate convenience in connection of a DAW directly to analogue synthesizers.

The outputs can be used as control voltages (CVs), for example with software such as Expert Sleepers Silent Way, and can also be used as audio outputs at high, modular synth-compatible levels.

With the ES-3, a single optical cable is all that is need to bring direct CV control from your DAW right into the heart of a modular system.
